S Edelstein: Did you have any corrections to make on the code? This was meant to be an opportunity for you to help another student with a helpful critique.
Rachel: A few things... There shouldn't be any uracils in your DNA. The uracils are there because you didn't reverse transcribe the start/stop codons. You must have added those in AFTER you reverse transcribed your code. They should have been added in before they could be converted into DNA as well. The problem with the way you did it (and that Edelstein obviously figured out) is that if you transcribe the DNA as you have presented it, you lose your start/stop codon and end up with the first code (below is my decode) that I have figured out, which is just a nonsense sentence. You didn't have a problem decoding another student's code, but make sure you understand the problem here.
DNA: AUGAAATTGTCTTAAGACGTCTGAAGTGGCTGGUAG RNA: UAC UUU AAC AGA AUU CUG CAG ACU UCA CCG ACC AUC
Codons as is: From in anthropology class students were eat pizza, study monster book
Codons as it you meant it to be: (start) In anthropology class, students were eat(ing) pizza, study(ing) monster(s). (stop)
Hello Rachel,
ReplyDeleteSTART In Anthropology class students were eat(ing) pizza and study(ing) monsters STOP
Good job! You got it right! I meant to put fossils after monsters but I accidentally left it out of the code.
